EMDR
What is EMDR therapy?
Short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, EMDR therapy facilitates the accessing and processing of disturbing life events and traumatic memories that are the cause for current symptoms, difficulties and negative beliefs. EMDR is not a technique, but a holistic approach to healing, centering every person’s innate movement towards wholeness and completion.
EMDR therapy can address a wide variety of issues: trauma/PTSD, general anxiety, panic, phobias, performance anxiety, habits/addictions, loss/grief, somatic complaints etc.
In a typical session the person recalls a distressing experience while following a bilateral, external stimulus (either eye movements, tactile and/or auditory stimuli). The process decreases the distress and allows for new, adaptive information to emerge. At the end of the session the person has a truer sense of themselves and the world, feels more integrated and in touch with their full potential.
What is Attachment-Focused EMDR?
Attachment-Focused EMDR has been developed by Dr. Laurel Parnell to address particularly developmental trauma such as early childhood abuse and neglect. It is a reparative approach, uniquely tailored to the client within their specific cultural context. A special emphasis is given to using resourcing for stabilizing and strengthening the person’s capacities as well as relational repair.
